Dolly Suite (Op. 56)
For Four C Flutes and Piano Gabriel Faure Arranged by Judy Nishimura Available from ALRY Publications Catalog #FQP02 Durations: 1. Berceuse (3:01) 2. Mi-a-ou (1:47) 3. Le Jardin de Dolly (2:33) 4. Kitty-Valse (2:30) 5. Tendresse (3:17) 6. Le Pas Espagnol (2:12) TOTAL: approx. 16 minutes These charming piano duets were written by Faure for the young daughter of his longtime mistress, Emma Bardac. The little girl, Helene, was so diminutive that she was nicknamed "Dolly." The six movements of the suite range from the familiar lyrical lullaby "Berceuse," to the exhilarating Spanish Dance at the end. In between are references to Dolly's brother, her dog and her garden. The flutes are amply supported by a piano that lets the flutists interact with each other, free of harmonic or accompaniment concerns. Complete recordings of all six movements can be found on ALRY's webpage. Many, many thanks to Matt Johnston who stepped in and recorded the flute parts when I was having computer issues.
