Flights of Passage
For Flute Choir By Judy Nishimura Piccolo, 4 C Flutes (2 double on Picc.), 2 Alto Flutes, Bass, Contrabass Available from ALRY Publications, LLC Catalog #FC502, $40.00 There are certain "rites of passage" that we all have to go through to reach maturity. Four of them are represented by movements in this work: 1) First, Birth, 2) First Steps, 3) First Love, and 4) First Flight (from the Nest). Birth is represented by stillness interrupted by the swirling rigors of birth. In "First Steps" a toddlin' baby tries out his moves to the accompaniment of a piccolo trio. "First Love" is an innocent tune that morphs into a girl-group bop, and the "First Flight" shows the young person stretching out heroically to leave the nest and live in the world on their own. Thanks to Marty Melicharek and his fine group the Camellia City Flute Choir for commissioning this work and premiering it at the National Flute Association's convention in 2019. The pandemic intervened a few months afterwards to prevent this from being released, but now it's here and hopefully will leave the nest to thrive!
